How to Minimize Grill-Related Fires at Your Home

The grill outside your home can help you prepare some fantastic meals. However, it can also pose a fire hazard if not cared for properly. If you are like many people, you use your grill, clean it, and store it. You may not think much about the actual maintenance and upkeep it requires. With a few helpful tips, you can avoid high-risk conditions. Here is what you should know.a close up of burgers being cooked on a grill

What Can Happen if You Do Not Maintain Your Grill?

It is the small things that can make a big difference when it comes to maintaining your outdoor grill. When you fail to maintain it, there may be a buildup of grease. The fuel tank may come loose, causing a gas-related fire. You may even see it fall over or collapse, creating the risk of starting your wooden deck on fire.

Home insurance may cover some of these damages. However, this type of fire is highly dangerous. It is best to do what you can to avoid any type of accident from occurring.

Tips for Maintaining the Safety of Your Grill

Each grill is a bit different. Take the time to read through the owner’s manual. It provides information on how to maintain that specific model. Whether it is a charcoal or wood-burning grill, or has special features such as a smoker, plays a role in how to maintain it. Use these tips as a guideline to get you started.

  • Store the propane for your grill properly. If you do not plan to use the grill for some time, disconnect the tank. Store the tank outdoors, but away from the home. Never bring it into your home’s garage either.

  • Remove all food particles, charring and grease from the grill every time you use it. That is critical to ensuring you are removing the most common cause of fires.

  • Store smaller grills out of the walkway or near paths. These can easily tip over. When using them, move them away from the home. Again, be sure the ground they sit on is stable and out of the way.

  • Clean all of the cooking grids and trip trays often. A good way to do this is to turn up the heat on the grill for 10 minutes after you finish cooking.

  • Always check the valves on the grill to ensure they are off all the way after use.

  • Don't leave ashes in the bottom of the grill.

Proper grill maintenance keeps your home safe. If you do have a fire, work with your home insurance company to get the repairs taken care of as soon as possible.
