Auto Insurance for Long Island, New York

New York drivers are required to carry minimum amounts of liability coverage to register a vehicle. Unforeseen accidents such as collisions and injuries can occur at any given time while you’re on the road, especially during the winter. Acquiring auto insurance coverage can protect you from these risks by assisting you in covering expenses related to an accident. With road hazards like snow and ice, having auto insurance is especially important to have during the winter season.

What Is Auto Insurance?

Auto insurance is a pretty basic insurance policy that protects you from paying out-of-pocket costs for accidents. Depending on the type of policy you have and how much you pay for your premium, your insurer can assist you in covering expenses related to an accident.

Auto insurance policies tend to vary depending on a variety of factors like location, car model and car owner, but a typical policy tends to include the following:

  • Liability coverage (including bodily injury and property damage liability) helps cover expenses when the policyholder is legally responsible, including damages, medical bills and court costs.

  • Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage helps cover damage or injury caused by another motorist who is not adequately insured.

  • Medical payments coverage and personal injury protection (PIP) coverage help cover medical expenses for the policyholder and possibly passengers following a car accident.

  • Comprehensive coverage helps cover damage from events such as fire, theft and vandalism.

  • Collision coverage helps cover damage after a collision with other vehicles or objects.

  • Replacement cost or gap coverage helps cover the replacement value of a severely damaged car rather than the lesser, depreciated value.

The importance of having an auto insurance policy, especially during the winter months, cannot be overstated. Be sure to contact one of our agents today to learn more about auto insurance coverage and potential benefits to include in your policy.

How Do I Prepare My Car for Winter? Car on the road

There are various precautions to take into consideration before taking your car out on the road during winter, especially in a state like New York. A general safety tip to keep in mind is to drive slowly. Snow and ice can put your car at risk for an accident; black ice is especially dangerous because it is very hard to spot while you’re driving.

The following are some more specific tips for preparing your vehicle for winter driving:

  • Carry emergency supplies. Nonperishable food, water, blankets and flashlights are important to keep in your vehicle in case an unexpected breakdown occurs.

  • Maintain an adequate tank of gas. Getting stuck in the snow with no gas is dangerous during the winter. Take necessary precautions by keeping your gas tank over 1/4 full so that you’re not at risk of getting stuck or stranded out in the cold.

  • Look out for wild game. Just like any time of year, deer and other animals can come out of nowhere while you’re driving, so keep an eye out—especially at dawn and dusk. Be especially vigilant in areas where there are signs indicating their presence.

  • Keep adequate windshield washer fluid. It’s tough to drive when your windshield is covered in snow, sleet or ice, so keep windshield wipers in good working condition. Ensure you have the antifreeze-standard windshield washer fluid so it doesn’t freeze in cold conditions.

  • Check your tire pressure. Lower temperatures typically lead to a reduction in a car’s tire pressure. This can increase your car’s brake time and lead to skidding, so be sure to keep an eye on your car’s tires.

Make sure you’re doing your part by taking these aspects into consideration.
