- Short-term disability (STD) has a waiting period of 0 to 14 days. The maximum benefit period is two years.
- Long-term disability (LTD) has a waiting period that may span several weeks or months, depending on the policy’s terms. The maximum benefit period may range from several years to lifelong coverage.
New York state disability benefits cannot be canceled by the insurer as long as premiums are paid as agreed. Disability benefits are also guaranteed renewable, providing beneficiaries the right to renew their coverage with the same benefits. The insurer can increase premiums if they do so for all policyholders.
Understanding the Hospital Rider
Employers can offer standard coverage options as well as a hospital rider. This rider increases the benefit amount by an additional $170 per week if the employee is hospitalized. The hospital rider may be beneficial for those who may face extended hospital stays or require additional medical care.
