Preventing Dog Attacks and Keeping You and Your Dog Safe

Preventing Dog Attacks and Keeping You and Your Dog Safe

Our furry family members are just that: family! But when you own a dog, you introduce yourself to certain risks, including getting caught in a fight between your dog and another dog, or being found responsible when your dog bites another animal or person.

Conveniently, there are actually lots of things you can do to help avoid dog attacks, as well as protect yourself from the legal and financial aftermath of dog bites.

Walk Smart

If you’re out on a walk with your dog, the two of you should maintain a safe distance between other pedestrians and their pets. Even if you know your pet is well-behaved, there’s no way of knowing how they’ll respond to another dog’s aggression. Before letting your dog interact with another person or dog, be sure to ask for that person’s permission and check if their dog is okay with meeting other dogs.

Keep an eye out for dogs whose leashes say things like “Do Not Approach,” “In Training,” or “Nervous.” These messages are in place to help protect not only that dog, but you and yours as well!

Warning Signs

If you know the signs to look for in a dog who is about to bite, you can get yourself and your dog out of the situation before it escalates.

Growling: When growling is coupled with baring teeth, licking lips, or yawning, it’s especially concerning.
Flat ears: If a dog flattens their ears against their head, this can be a sign of an impending attack.
A stiff tail and tense body: Look for signs that a dog is tense, as this is a good signal that their emotions match their posture.

The Right Insurance

If it’s your dog who bites someone and they bring a personal liability suit against you, you don’t have to face the fees alone. Many homeowners aren’t aware that their homeowners insurance can include coverage for dog bite claims!
